Over time the finish can come off and eventually rust and that is an issue if the dishes wearing them down. The best way is just to load it correctly and not force items onto the tines. The dw rack from each brand loads a different way so make sure you refer to the manual to at least have an idea of how they designed it. Once you see one rusting or the finish coming off you can try to rubber coat it or spray it with some rust preventative.
