Appliances today offer much more modern conveniences to make life easier. With faster preheats in ovens, micros that air fry, fridges with dual icemakers more energy efficient. All this modern technology means to me they won’t last as long. Being in the business as long as I have, the newer units just do not hold up. It is kind of sad to see a $4,000 energy-star rated efficient fridge tossed in the landfill because the compressor or the computer board went bad within 3 years. Fewer people are fixing appliances, as we have become a more throwaway, instant gratification-focused society. So to answer you directly, I feel the older appliances were simpler, easier to fix, and did last longer. Mechanical timers etc., hold up better, but so did crank windows in cars. So you need to sometimes accept it and move on with the times.
