Over the years, I have bought refrigerators with a built-in automatic ice maker and ice water options.  I have noticed these components tend to go south and need repair after a few years.  I was wondering if this is due to us having well water.  Our water is treated with softener salt if that makes any difference.  But, I cannot help but think our water causes a build-up in the lines that makes these components break down over time.  And if so, do you have any suggestions on how to clean the lines?

Ice and water dispensing in the doors are always troublesome. It also does impact the life expectancy of the fridge. Many of these last 10 years on average today. Well water can and will impact the lines. But as long as running a pre-filter for things like sediment, you should be fine. Amazon does sell a line cleaning kit. Also, using distilled vinegar is the best, and then flush it with water. Do this a few times a year and that will help you out tremendously.
