We discovered a large buildup of ice in the bottom of our upright frost free freezer. The drain is at the bottom of the freezer under the thick buildup of ice. How do we fix this without turning it off and leaving the door open, thus losing all the food inside?

The drain is probably clogged up. So needs defrosting, and if it’s packed with food, it’s not a good way to do it but empty it out. If you can physically see the drain hold take a large Phillips head screwdriver and heat it up with a torch or burner etc. Then when hot, press it into that spot, and it will at least melt the ice into the drain to alleviate some of the jam. The best way of course, is to just get some coolers to move the food and defrost it.
