So generally, I like to stick to a standard 24″ size dishwasher regardless of the household because they do not make many good 18″ units on the market. My top pick for a family if stainless or color is the KitchenAid line 604 or 704. Both series are heavy-duty workhorses with quality racks so when you say family I think of this unit!
