A simple surge protector that costs under $10 can solve your GFCI outlet problems

Many of you are running into issues with ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets popping on refrigerators and washers.

First, let’s understand what a GFCI outlet is and why you need one. A GFCI outlet simply put is best used when moisture can interfere with electricity and will safely shut the outlet off when any problems occur! So, if you’re near a bathroom sink and splash water on say an outlet you can rest easy knowing you won’t get shocked!

When it comes to appliances that involve water such as washers and refrigerators these become a requirement. The code in many areas is that a GFCI needs to be in use if there is a water source nearby.  Generally, within 6 feet. So, it affects most kitchens and laundry rooms.

The issue today is that most new appliances are so susceptible to power issues that they are popping these breakers inadvertently. Meaning your wash cycle can stop halfway through with a tub full of soapy water, or your fridge can fail, and all of your food spoils and your ice cream melts!

GFCI Outlet

Let me take you back to 2 years ago when my Electrolux washer kept getting an error code and would pop the outlet like every other week. It was driving my wife crazy as the outlet was in a tough to reach spot. I called my plumber and said it can’t be the machine. In addition, I am getting more and more of these calls at work too! So, there must be something fishy going on here.

He said, "Al, do me a favor, go on Amazon and buy a $9 outlet surge protector, and put it in the GFCI." He said this will keep the level constant, but also protect you.

The solution to your GFCI outlet popping could be as simple (and cheap) as a $9 surge protector!

I have never had an issue since! Fast forward to today, and I recommend them all the time. Some customers removed the GFCI. But I can’t tell you to do that as I don’t want to go against local building codes. Safety first, second and third! Basically, if you find your appliance popping the GFCI outlet a lot, this little device can save you a headache and potentially a ton of food from spoiling.
