Celebrate Earth Day with Sustainable Appliances!

Happy Earth Day! 🌱🌎

Sustainability is a big topic these days. As everyone is aware it is so important that we all are mindful of the impact we are leaving on Earth and be sure to do what we can to reduce our carbon footprint. The efforts of each individual person help, no action taken is too small. However, the most important factor is that organizations do their part and work towards reducing their negative impact on the environment.

That’s why I am so thankful to work in an industry where brands are shifting a lot of their focus towards protecting the environment and moving towards a more sustainable future. To celebrate Earth Day, I want to highlight some of the brands doing an outstanding job of creating high-quality products without sacrificing our planet.

1. Electrolux

Electrolux   Electrolux

Electrolux is making great strides towards reducing their environmental footprint. They have been integrating recycled materials into their products, promoting resource efficiency, using more sustainable packaging, and increasing availability for spare parts. They have implemented sustainable practices and features into each of their product categories. When it comes to their refrigerators, they are constantly creating innovations that improve food preservation so you can enjoy fresher ingredients for longer. (Here are some models to check out – ERMC2295AS / ERFC2393AS / ERFG2393AS).

A major category where Electrolux is working hard to make sustainable is laundry. Their motto is “Make it Last”, referring to extending the lifespan of clothing so we produce less waste. Over the past 20 years, consumers have quadrupled the number of garments they go through and 90% of clothes are thrown away before they need to be.  If you can keep your clothes for an extra 9 months, carbon, waste and water footprints will be reduced by between 20% and 30%. Taking this knowledge, they created washers and dryers with new care technology that helps your clothes last longer. Check out these features listed below that Electrolux implemented so you can hold onto your clothing for longer.

  • SmartBoost® technology – makes their washing machines the most effective in stain removal. It premixes water and detergent before the cycle begins, maximizing the cleaning power of the detergent.
  • Balanced Dry™ – helps protect your precious fabrics by eliminating temperature spikes and keeping your garments cooler throughout the cycle without adding additional dry time.
  • Optic Whites™ – Keeps your white clothing and linens looking newer longer by preventing the redeposit of dirt and other residues, keeping whites whiter than the normal cycle with bleach.
  • Pure Rinse™ – Removes detergent residues and fragrances that can irritate skin. It rinses cleaner than their extra rinse option without using more water.
  • LuxCare® – Save time and energy and protect items from over- or under-drying with their unique sensor that detects humidity on the surface and inside items so that all your fabrics are treated with precision and care.
  • Instant Refresh Cycle – Saves water and energy while also removing wrinkles and refreshing items from light wear in 10 minutes, without having to do a full wash.

2. Bosch

Bosch Bosch

“Companies shouldn’t have to choose between profitable and doing what’s best for the planet. If the right path is chosen both aims go hand in hand” – Dr. Stefan Hartung, Chairman of the Bosch board of management.

Bosch is another brand that feels it is their responsibility to take care of the planet by focusing their resources on sustainable, high-quality appliances. The company was just announced as the 2023 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. This organization honors businesses each year that have made outstanding contributions to protecting the environment through superior energy achievements. Although they have many energy efficient appliances, they excel the most with their refrigerators, with each one being ENERGY STAR® certified. Their ENERGY STAR® refrigerators are about 9% more energy efficient than models that just meet the federal minimum. Below are some great features they have incorporated into their refrigerators.

  • High – Efficiency Compressors – These create less heat when they are running, use less energy, and are often quieter than standard compressors.
  • Eco Mode – automatically adjusts temperatures in the appliance to reduce required cooling capacity and the appliance runs in an eco-friendly, energy-saving setting.
  • LED Lighting – featured throughout for optimal visibility and low energy consumption.
  • Vacation Mode – If leaving the appliance for a long period, energy-saving Vacation Mode can be activated from the control panel or through the Home Connect app.

3. General Electric

General Electric    General Electric

Lastly, I wanted to highlight GE as they are also implementing many practices to help overcome this climate crisis. Firstly, they are a partner with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who have helped GE carry out many different sustainable practices. They are the first appliance manufacturer to implement the EPA’s Responsible Appliance Disposal Program. This is a product recycling program where they not only promote and educate consumers on the benefits of recycling your old appliances, but also recycle them for you. If you purchase a new GE energy efficient refrigerator from a participating dealer, your old refrigerator will be taken away to be recycled. Thanks to the EPA, they have also committed to a more sustainable way for transporting their products, by adding a fleet of Electric trucks. These EV trucks were estimated to cover 125,000 miles yearly and reduce 210 tons of CO2 emissions in the first year. They of course also have a variety of ENERGY STAR® certified appliances and below is one I wanted to point out.

GE® 30″ ENERGY STAR Certified Under the Cabinet Hood

GE® 30" ENERGY STAR Certified Under the Cabinet Hood

  • Uses compact fluorescent lamps (CFL bulbs) which use 70% less energy than the average models, but also provides better lighting to see your cooking.
  • Quiet design with sound levels down to 1.3 sones, which is well below the ENERGY STAR requirement of 2.0 sones.

All in all, there are so many companies and organizations, especially in the appliance industry, doing their part to combat the climate crisis. It is great to see all the avenues in which these companies have found to work towards a more sustainable future. It is important we support these businesses, and all do our part to leave a positive impact on our planet.
